6/25/2023 0 Comments The goldfinch book synopsis![]() ![]() He was a teenager who didn’t really want to grow up and had an idealized view of how childhood should be. So what was it about Catcher that made it banned? For me, the book was about a young man who wasn’t able to connect well with others. The Catcher in the Rye was one of the only books I read back to back to back. ![]() Then I read it and was introduced to Holden Caulfield, who I would soon call a brother because of how he seemed to be me, or at least a shadow of me carried by the hot sun of Salinger’s early creativity. So it was with great delight that I was able to buy a copy of the book in 1981 at the local Walden Books store, who provided it from a box in the backroom and sold to me wrapped in brown paper so no one would see what I’d purchased. By banned I mean that the book was considered an unhealthy read and stores and libraries were urged not to provide them to young healthy minds. By banned, I don’t mean that there were any Fahrenheit 451 Fireman to come and burn them up - although I am sure there were those who wished that to be true. ![]() The reason I’d only heard about it and not seen it was because I was living in Tennessee and at the time it was a banned book. I’d also heard about it through a Freshman English teacher at my High School. ![]() I’d heard about this 1950s novel through my parents, both educators. I was introduced to the idea of The Catcher in the Ryein 1979. ![]() 6/24/2023 0 Comments The Library Book by Susan Orlean![]() ![]() ![]() "It's a Fact: Mistakes Are Embarrassing the Publishing Industry". ![]() ^ Alter, Alexandra (September 22, 2019)."Who started the 1986 fire at the Los Angeles Library? In The Washington Post, Ron Charles called The Library Book "a wide-ranging, deeply personal and terrifically engaging investigation of humanity's bulwark against oblivion: the library." Reviewing the book for The New York Times, Michael Lewis wrote, "Susan Orlean has once again found rich material where no one else has bothered to look for it…Once again, she's demonstrated that the feelings of a writer, if that writer is sufficiently talented and her feelings sufficiently strong, can supply her own drama. I disagree with Watts about what the "I" is. But we, the conscious bit, should hang on as long as we can. But we like being conscious! One day probably humanity will evolve past it, as the vampires (and many other things) in Blindsight do. Consciousness is, in this world, a superfluous evolutionary dead end. In a reddit AMA after Echopraxia, Watts was talking about the theme of consciousness in Firefall (more Blindsight than Echopraxia, but it came in the Echopraxia AMA) and said that perhaps we should think of ourselves not as the human organism, but as the parasite (consciousness) riding the organism (human). They're stimulating and interesting and important. Or even what events actually transpired in the book. I love that Watts takes scientific developments seriously, I love that it takes a good amount of sitting down and thinking to work out what a book is about. ![]() |
